WHAT?
You may ask, WHAT is the point in using ICT's in the English classroom...this page explores how it can assist learning and student engagement on a subject specific basis. It will also look into the more specific student learning needs that can be supported through the use of successful ICT integration.
"In Years 9 and 10, students interact with peers, teachers, individuals, groups and community members in a range of face-to-face and online/virtual environments."
The Australian National Curriculum - English Year Level 10 Description
From the above statement we can all make the judgement that with the rolling implementation of the national curriculum teachers will be encouraged and required to integrate ICT usage and learning within their teaching practices.
The blog ICT in English NZ is written by a New Zealand English Teacher and looks into the effectiveness of Blogging and YouTube posting from an English teaching/learning perspective. The outcomes it looks into and the student learning it demonstrates directly link to Australian Curriculum objectives such as:
-Understanding that poeple's evaluations of texts are influenced by their value systems, the context and the purpose and mode of communication. Language: Year 10 English
-Reflect on, extend, endorse or refute others interpretations of and responses to literature. Literature: Year 10 English
-Use a range of software, including word processing programs, confidently, flexibly and imaginatively to create, edit and publish texts, considering the identified purpose if characteristics of the user. Literacy: Year 10 English
WHO?
When asked who ICT can benefit the answer is an all encompassing EVERYONE...but for a more specific answer we will look at how ICT's can assist ESL students.
The following paper was undertaken to look specifically into assisting ESL students (reffered to as EAL students). It covers the English subject specifically but the information and resources mentioned can easily be adapted to almost any subject area. The paper looks into opportunities provided by ICT usage such as image based teaching/learning, translation programs and how the use of ICT's can allow students to copy, record, and slow down information being gievn which will enable students to work through the information at an individual pace. Therefore enabling them to learn without the stress and pressure of keeping up with the entire class.

One thing I noticed while looking at this paper was that many of the tools it mentions and demontrates is that they could be beneficial for students who require may other types of support in their learning. We encourage pre-service and current educator to account for individual learners and he ue of ICT's can greatly assist in this. The Australian Curriculum mentions that students with a disability should be given the opportunity to "access age-equivalent content" it goes on to state that "the way in which they access it and the focus of their learning may vary according to their individual needs, strengths, goals and interests" by this statement we can infer that the use of programs which will assist them in working at their own pace and utilisnig programs which enhance their learning and undestanding is something which we as educators are encouraged to do.
